Translating the overhaul of LEED

Green building advocates say a revamp of the LEED standard for commercial buildings will fix some weaknesses in the widely used rating system.

The new version of the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design program goes into effect June 27. Developers of projects already registered under older versions of the program can upgrade to LEED 2009 — also known as LEED 3.0.

Developers can obtain LEED 2009 certification in five categories: new construction; core and shell; commercial interiors; existing buildings (operation and maintenance); and schools.
